Island-Hopping Across Greece with the Kids and Plenty of Tzatziki

This summer, Sharon, the girls and I packed up and headed off for a much-needed Greek island adventure. Our plan was simple: slow travel, sunshine, authentic food, and no big resorts. And I’m so glad to say we got exactly that – and more.

We started our trip in Santorini – not the busy, Instagram-famous side that you see in travel brochures, but the quieter, more authentic south. We stayed at Ambeli Apartments in Perivolos , a peaceful area just five minutes’ walk from the beach. It was the perfect base for a relaxing few days. Our apartment overlooked a pool with thick cushioned daybeds (which we fully appreciated after travel days), and the hosts, Sofia and Maria , were just brilliant. Warm, welcoming, and full of those thoughtful touches that make a place really special – from home-baked orange cake to a surprise cooking class for the guests, they made us feel like part of the family - full of love and warmth and everything you want from fantastic hosts. Some tavernas and restaurants were also highlights including LAVA - no menu, no prices, just fresh Greek home cooking, T ranquilo – a veggie/vegan place with bright dishes and a laid-back vibe and Savvas Popeye – a more modern take on Greek food, casual and super tasty. All within just a stone's throw!

On a particularly windy day, we decided to explore further and jumped on the local bus to Megalochori , a gorgeous little village full of winding cobbled streets, bell towers, and boutiques. The bus was surprisingly modern and cool – and the timetable was more of a suggestion than a schedule, but it was all part of the fun.

We also hopped aboard the “Fun Train” , which runs a 45-minute loop around the local area. It was a great hit with the girls and perfect for a lazy morning. We spent one morning at the local marina , the girls "fishing" with their new nets, while we wandered along the waterfront with ice creams. Simple, slow and wonderful.

After four lovely nights, it was time to move on. We took a taxi down to Thira Port – chaotic and packed – and grabbed a (pricey!) drink while we waited for our Blue Star Ferry to Naxos . Once aboard, the chaos gave way to calm. We sat on the open deck in economy and watched the Aegean pass us by. Two hours flew.

In Naxos , we picked up a hire car – essential, especially as we were staying right up in the north , in the tiny village of Apollonas . Our hotel, the Adonis , was another gem – clean, comfortable and run by the kindest people. The whole area felt wild and untouched – nothing like the more built-up parts of the island. It’s rugged and dramatic, with winding roads through valleys, mountain goats around corners, and peaceful little coves at every turn.

We explored traditional villages, tucked-away beaches and some brilliant local tavernas. Two that stood out were Niko’s Taverna – right by the water in Apollonas, with Niko himself cooking up incredible food. The setting was unbeatable, and also Kalimera – with panoramic views and proper home-style dishes. Another real highlight was the Olive Press which we highly recommend for visitors - not too far from Naxos Town or the airport, this old Olive Mill has the same machinery and photos up from days gone by but the family has converted it into a mini museum with Olive tasting and it is simply divine and totally free. Even the children were mesmerised and loving the olives and tapanades on offer.

We also spent time on the southern beaches – Agios Prokopios and Mikri Vigla . Both had soft sand and crystal-clear turquoise waters , gently shelving into the sea – absolutely perfect for kids and could easily rival Caribbean beaches. You could rent sunbeds or just lay out a towel. Add in a beachfront taverna and it was holiday heaven.

Naxos Town was great for a wander and a bit of shopping before we boarded another ferry – this time just a 30-minute hop to Paros on the SeaJets . It was fast and a little bumpier than Blue Star, but very efficient.

Paros had a completely different feel – still authentic but softer somehow. We stayed in Piso Livadi , a little fishing village with a lovely beach and a friendly, local feel. It was the perfect final stop. The tavernas around the port were excellent, but one place we really loved was Anna Giorgos (just before Logaras) – amazing food, lovely staff, and a quirky little bar and shop attached called Funky Llama , which had some really special finds.

We also spent a day at Punda Beach Club – half chilled sandy beach, half upbeat beach club with a pool, music, hammocks and all the extras. A fun change of pace. Another favourite day was spent exploring Prodromos , a nearby village full of flower-lined lanes and traditional cafés. It felt like walking through a postcard.

But the absolute highlight of Paros? Lefkes – a beautifully preserved mountain village with whitewashed houses, jasmine-scented alleyways, bell towers and a picture-perfect square. It was peaceful, authentic and full of charm – exactly what we came for.

After that, it was time to head home. We took the SeaJets ferry back to Piraeus , and instead of heading straight to the airport, we made one last stop. We’d planned for a four-hour layover , just in case of delays, and it turned out to be the best decision.

We jumped in a taxi and headed to Artemis , a beach town just 15 minutes from Athens Airport . It was full of locals , had another beautiful beach, and gave us one last taste of Greek summer before flying home. We had lunch at Thomas Taverna – fantastic food, kind service and a perfect final memory of the trip.

Then, it was back to the airport – sun-kissed, salty-haired, and already planning our next trip. Syros caught our eye as we sailed past it earlier in the week, so that’s going firmly on the list for next time.

Greece has been a favourite of ours for years, and this trip reminded us why. It’s not about ticking off sights or chasing the busiest resorts – it’s about slowing down, connecting with people, and letting the islands work their magic.

And honestly? They always do.

Has Tourism Killed the Way We Used to Travel?

I’m writing this from a simple apartment on the edge of the sea in Naxos. The sun is beginning to set, the water is still and clear, and the only sounds are the cicadas and the clinking of cutlery from a small taverna a few metres away. It’s peaceful, authentic and beautiful – everything a Greek island escape should be. And yet… it’s quiet. Too quiet.

Where is everyone?

Twenty or thirty years ago, places like this would be full of British families in July. They’d be staying in locally-owned studios, picking up fresh bread from the village bakery in the morning, eating out at small tavernas in the evening, and perhaps hiring a car for a day or two to explore a nearby beach or historical site. It was low-key, affordable, and often far more sustainable than what we’re seeing now.

Back then, tourism felt more connected to the place . The money travellers spent was flowing directly into the local economy. You’d buy your fruit from the old lady in the corner shop, have lunch in a family-run café, and your children would play on the beach with local kids. The experiences were simple, but the memories lasting.

So what changed?

The Rise of the All-Inclusive

Fast forward to today, and the holiday landscape looks very different. The all-inclusive resort model has become the dominant choice for many. Understandably so – it offers convenience, predictability, and value. Meals, drinks, kids’ clubs, entertainment, waterparks – it’s all there in one place, and paid for up front. For families on a budget, it’s an easy option. But at what cost?

When travellers don’t leave the hotel, the surrounding village or town begins to suffer. Tavernas sit empty. Shops close early. Local traditions are no longer performed for visitors because there’s no one there to see them. It’s a slow erosion of what made these places special in the first place.

If the only money being spent is going straight back to international hotel chains, how are the people who live here meant to benefit from tourism?

The Sustainability Question

We often hear about sustainable travel – but are we really making choices that reflect it? Supporting sustainability isn’t just about carrying a reusable bottle or skipping a daily towel change. It’s about considering the impact of where and how we spend.

A family staying in a locally-owned apartment, eating in different restaurants each night and exploring the island in a hire car contributes to many layers of the local economy. One staying entirely within the walls of a large resort may contribute very little beyond the hotel gate.

The reality is: every Euro matters . And where it ends up has long-term consequences.

A Changing Tourism Industry

As a travel agency, we’ve seen a clear shift in demand. Over the past 15 years, the interest in simple self-catering holidays has declined. Instead, people ask for more facilities, more inclusions, more ‘things to do on-site’. The idea of "convenience first" has shaped the kind of holidays that are now being built.

But while we understand the appeal, we can’t help but feel something’s being lost.

Is convenience now coming at the cost of connection? Are we so busy looking for the best deal or the perfect Instagram photo that we’re forgetting to actually experience the places we’re visiting?

We’re currently travelling around the Greek islands – the small, easy-to-reach ones that are often skipped over in favour of Mykonos or Santorini. And what we’re seeing is both heartwarming and sad: raw, untouched beauty all around us, but very few visitors enjoying it. The beaches are quiet, the owners of small guesthouses are welcoming but concerned. The local cafés are full of character, but often empty.

And yet, the views are every bit as photo-worthy as the more famous spots – just without the crowds.

Time to Rebalance?

We’re not saying all-inclusive holidays are bad – they serve a purpose, and for many, they make travel possible. But perhaps it’s time to rebalance our approach . Maybe every second or third trip could be a return to the old way: a locally-owned apartment, a wander to the village each evening, and the chance to chat to the waiter about where they recommend visiting tomorrow.

Sustainable tourism isn’t about sacrifice – it’s about intentional choices. It’s about stepping back and asking: What kind of impact am I having by being here?

Why It Still Matters

Because if travellers stop coming to these quieter places – the Naxos villages, the hidden coves of Paros, the hillside hamlets in Tilos or Amorgos – they may stop existing in the way we know and love. The old man who rents out two simple rooms above the sea may no longer bother. The family-run taverna might close, not because it’s not good enough, but because there’s no one left to serve.

Do we really want a future where the only way to holiday is behind the gates of a resort?

In Conclusion

As we sit here on a quiet stretch of Naxos coastline, eating fresh fish from the taverna next door, we’re reminded that the beauty of travel lies in simplicity – in slowing down, noticing the details, and supporting the communities that make these places special.

Maybe it’s time we all asked ourselves: What kind of traveller do I want to be? And what kind of tourism do I want to support?

If you're looking to make the most of your holidays in 2025, there's a clever way to stretch your annual leave and enjoy up to 65 days off work. With a bit of planning and smart use of bank holidays, you can turn your standard allowance into extended breaks for relaxation or adventure. Here’s how to do it.

In England and Wales, there are eight public bank holidays each year. These include seasonal celebrations like Christmas, New Year’s Day, and Easter, as well as national observances such as the early May and late August bank holidays. By strategically booking annual leave around these dates, you can enjoy longer breaks while using fewer leave days.

New Year’s Break

Turn New Year’s Day into a five-day break by booking 2 and 3 January (Thursday and Friday), giving you time off from 1 January to 5 January using just two days of annual leave.

Easter Holiday

Reykjavik: A deserved bucket list destination

Can you believe we finally made it to Reykjavik?! I have wanted to come for so long, as you know, and it has not disappointed.

I was surprised at the journey time from the airport but when we arrived we were waist high in snow and ice so it's not exactly a quick bus journey to the city. We are staying right on the edge of the city which is walking distance to all the Christmas markets, and the inner city cobbled streets, with beautifully decorated shops selling all sorts of lovely sweet treats, souvenirs and bits and pieces. It's so festive!

We booked the Northern Lights trip for the first night, but we didn't get to go unfortunately as it was cloudy (apparently this is common and they just put you on the next night tour instead). We went on the next night instead and didn't see the lights but it was gorgeous nonetheless.

We did the whale watching trip that day. I should have checked the weather first! It would have been amazing if it was calmer waters but there were weather warnings, and I spent most of the time being sick - how embarrassing! Being pregnant definitely didn't help me :( I will remember for next time!

It's our last day today and we are headed to the Blue Lagoon which looks amazing. It's a bit of a drive out of the city so we decided to do it en route to the airport. The weather is perfect for it - icy cold and the waters are so warm and great for the body apparently. It will be the perfect way to end the trip.

I will definitely be coming back one day to do the tours in the rest of the country and not just Reykjavik - there is so much to see and do. Maybe we can come together?

A Postcard from Brazil....

Last week I landed in Rio - there's something really exciting about being here. I wish you were here. If you ever come I would highly recommend the cable car ride to Sugar Loaf Mountain as well as exploring Ipanema and Copacabana beach.

After a couple of days here I travelled by road and boat to Isla Grande which is a tropical island with no cars, a perfect escapism with beautiful white sandy beaches and nature trails. It was so gorgeous! I also spent some time in Paraty which is an UNESCO World Heritage Site and has tropical forests, waterfalls and mountains. I was so pleased I went.

However, the absolute highlight of my trip has been Iguassu Falls. It is on the border of Argentina and I explored the falls from both sides. It is truly spectacular and the photos don't do it justice at all but I have included some so you can see what I mean. Such a stunning country, I will definitely be back. Maybe you can join me next time!?

Upcoming Changes for UK Travellers to Europe: What You Need To Know

The ETIAS and EES Changes for Travellers to Europe

As the UK’s relationship with the EU has shifted post-Brexit, there are some upcoming changes that UK travellers should be aware of when planning trips to Europe in 2025, onwards. Two significant systems will be introduced by the European Union that will affect entry requirements, aiming to enhance security and streamline border processes for non-EU travellers, including those from the UK.

1. EU Entry/Exit System (EES)

The first major change which is separate to the ETIAS is the EU Entry/Exit System (EES) , which was set to be implemented towards the end of 2024 but this has been postponed and is now expected to begin on 12th October 2025, with a 6 month phased implementation period (expected, but not confirmed). The EES will replace the current system of manually stamping passports at the border with an automated system that electronically tracks entry and exit. This system applies to non-EU travellers, including UK citizens, who travel to Schengen Area countries for short stays (up to 90 days within a 180-day period).

The EES will use biometric data, including facial recognition and fingerprint scans, to register arrivals and departures at the border. This means that each time you enter or exit a Schengen Area country, your data will be stored electronically, reducing the need for physical passport stamps.

The key advantage of the EES is its enhanced ability to track how long non-EU visitors are staying within the Schengen Area, ensuring compliance with visa-free travel limits. This update also streamlines border processes and adds an additional layer of security.

Irish passport holders are exempt from EES. If you are a British passport holder but have EU residency , you are also exempt from EES but you do require the correct documents, which are available on the "Living In Guide" on the gov.uk website.

People of all ages will need to go through the EES checks, however children under 12 will not need to provide fingerprints but they will need to have a facial scan taken.

There is nothing to apply for regarding this change, it is simply a more streamlined change to border controls which have always been in operation and there is no cost attached to it. However, we would advise that when the system first goes into operation, it is likely to cause some delays at borders whilst teething issues are ironed out.

2. European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) – Coming in 2026/2027

The second major change is the introduction of the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) , which was expected by 2024, but is now expected to go live from October 2026 with a 6 month grace period* until April 2027. This is in addition and separate to the above EES. ETIAS will be a mandatory pre-travel authorisation required for non-EU nationals who do not need a visa to enter the Schengen Area*, including UK citizens.

*The grace period means it will not be compulsory for the first 6 months but only on condition that other criteria are met. Full details of this are not yet released.

Much like the ESTA system in the US, UK travellers will need to apply for ETIAS online before travelling. The application process will require basic personal and travel information, as well as security-related questions. Once granted, ETIAS will be valid for multiple entries over a three-year period or until the traveller’s passport expires , whichever comes first.

The cost of the ETIAS is set at €20 for travellers aged 18 to 70 , and it will cover visits of up to 90 days within a 180-day period, similar to the current visa-free arrangements. While this authorisation does not serve as a visa, it adds a layer of security screening before travel, and authorities will be able to deny entry to individuals deemed a security risk.

Once in effect, the ETIAS must be applied for in advance, before travelling. At the present time you cannot yet apply for an ETIAS (please do not be fooled by any agencies claiming they can do so). When it does go live the official website for applications will be www.europa.eu/etias .

3. ETA Requirements for Non-UK Nationals visiting the UK

In addition to the changes affecting UK travellers entering Europe, there are new requirements for non-UK nationals visiting the UK. From 2024, the UK will introduce its Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system, similar to the EU’s ETIAS.

Non-visa nationals, including EU citizens, will need to apply for an ETA before entering the UK. This online application will screen travellers before they depart and is part of a broader move towards digital border controls. The ETA will cover short-term stays and transit through the UK.

The ETA system is scheduled to be fully operational by April 2025. Nationals from Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries are the first to be impacted, starting in late 2023 and early 2024. By January 8, 2025, non-Europeans will need an ETA, and European nationals will be required to have one by April 2, 2025.

The ETA costs £10 and is valid for two years or until the traveller’s passport expires . It allows for multiple entries during that time, making the process smoother for frequent visitors. Travellers can apply online via the official UK Government website or the "UK ETA" mobile app. The application process is quick, and decisions are typically issued within three working days.

Even transit passengers changing flights in the UK will be required to have an ETA. The UK government sees this as a way to enhance border security by screening visitors before they arrive

Bali: All You Need to Know

An Insider's Guide to Beautiful Bali

Over the Summer, myself and my family (husband, 2 children) spent 5 weeks travelling across Malaysia and Bali. I have to confess that a number of people had advised me that Bali was so overcrowded and full of tourists after an influx of visitors over recent years and had put me off the idyllic island I had always wanted to visit. If you too have heard these stories I want to reassure you that Bali was everything and more than I had ever imagined. Do not let people put you off. However - you do need to know which resort to choose and what you want to get out of your stay.

Bali is a large island, and whilst distances don’t look too far on paper, the road infrastructure isn’t ideal for the number of vehicles on the road (a multitude of trucks, cars and mopeds/motorbikes). The roads are typically narrow, without pavements and not in great condition. They can also be very windy given the terrain of the island, so what might look like 1-1.5 hours distance is easily double that. I don’t think we ever made it out of 3rd gear after travelling length and breadth of the country!

Here is a snippet of where we visited and I have to say - I would highly recommend and would happily do it all over again:

From Denpasar airport (which was long and arduous whether you had arranged a visa on arrival or not), we travelled by road around 3 hours up to the coastal town of Amed on the East coast . We purposely avoided the far Southern resorts knowing how busy they are and we were looking for something a little less commercialised. Boy, were we in for a treat! This town is best known across the island for snorkelling and diving and if you’re an underwater enthusiast you will be blown away. It is genuinely world-class and in my snorkelling experience, has only rivalled the Maldives. Turtles swam with us just off the shore of our hotel, along with such an array of tropical fish I couldn’t even name them all. Small boats take you on short trips out to various dive sites if you wish. This is a very laid back town without the big names and commercialised malls you will find in other locations. It certainly isn’t the jumping nightlife of the South but if you would love a more Balinese experience, this is perfect. We spent 10 days here as we had a long Summer break however I would still recommend at least 4 days here. We also went to visit the iconic Lempuyang Temple and Lehangan Sweet with stunning views of the volcano and excellent photo opportunities. It wasn’t far from Amed so provides the perfect spot for exploring a little more inland and some more cultural sites.

From Amed we travelled across to Ubud to visit the famous Monkey Forest and spent a week immersed in the jungle atmosphere. It was such a contrast to be inland, surrounded by lush, tropical greenery and I indulged in some wonderful Yoga classes. It was a complete wind down, swimming in the pool, watching monkeys run through the hotel, squirrels bouncing from tree to tree and frogs jumping across lily pads. The perfect immersion into nature. I was truly in heaven. Outside the hotels, the streets are very, very busy, as are the roads which almost come to a standstill at night time. It is expected by anyone who lives there and road rage just doesn’t exist (I will come to Balinese culture in a moment), but it is very hustle and bustle and you can make your evenings as lively or laid back as you wish. There are excellent live music venues and clubs if you prefer a later evening (with an 8 and 2 year old in tow this was off the cards for me).

A note on Balinese culture : Bali, for me, gave me the same vibe as I have always felt in Thailand. Such happy, joyful and above all, genuinely grateful, people. Often in holiday destinations you have smiley people and can almost feel that it’s because you are a customer. Balinese people are just very giving, loving, selfless and welcoming. You will see every morning and throughout the day, they will regularly go to the nearby small temple (in most streets and next to houses, they are in abundance) and go through a ritual with offerings to the Gods. They are a mostly Hindi community and they make “canang” (we had the delight to learn how to make them in our next stop which was a treat) with flowers freshly picked for each God, with each facing a particular direction and include incense and a gift along with a spoken ritual. They did this outside each room in our first hotel and is taken extremely seriously. This is all in giving thanks for their Gods. You see many, many kites in the sky all day and night; again, these are flown as a symbol of thanks for the Gods and this culture weaves its’ way through all of their daily lives. it’s a beautiful thing to witness and definitely creates a wonderful energy amongst the community.

Our final stop for our last week was down in Seminyak , on the South West of the island. We knew it was going to be busier and a lot more commercialised than Amed, and is another total contrast. It’s a large surf destination (so no snorkelling on this side of the island) with long, wide sandy beaches, popular beach clubs, and a great promenade to walk along and relax at in the evening (think oversized bean bags, cocktails and sundown and spectacular sunsets). I wasn’t expecting to love Seminyak (which runs along into Legian and then Kuta - very busy, popular and established resorts in their own right) but actually - I did! It was certainly more touristic and I am definitely pleased that we didn’t do it first, but it was another fantastic contrast and that, for me, is key.

To visit Bali, even with 3 centres, we still only felt that we scratched the surface. There are so many resorts to choose from and each offer something special in their own right so I highly recommend visiting at least 2, if not 3 or 4 resorts if you have the time to do so. Even 2-3 nights in some places may be sufficient, but for a destination which is so magical and fascinating, it doesn’t seem to do it justice to see only 1. We would have loved to have headed over to the Gili Islands (so close, and many trips to head over by ferry), or Nusa Penida or Nusa Lembongan . I feel certain that I will return one day (I was so sad to leave even after 4 weeks) and I will then explore further but if you haven’t yet been to Bali and it’s on your bucket list - you will absolutely not regret going. It is just so special and magical.

Whilst there are an abundance of 4 and 5 star hotels which are beautiful and well located, for those on more of a budget there are equally some incredible choices of accommodation in very small B&Bs and independently owned hotels which offer excellent stays. Local restaurants called Warungs offer some of the best food that we ate with the typical Nasi Goreng (fried rice), Mie Goreng (fried noodles) and Pisang Goreng (fried bananas) plus lots more. They are so well priced and brilliantly authentic. Bali can be done on all budgets; it is not only for those with a luxury 5 star budget, although this is also more than available.

Travelling In and Around Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur

With some time to spend and explore Kuala Lumpur, I booked 7 nights, but split across 3 different areas.

First up, on arrival, we transferred to the city centre staying just a few hundred metres from the Petronas Towers right in the centre of the “Golden Triangle”. This is home to the large, famous park right next to the towers, the business district and a large proportion of the 5 star luxury hotels in the city. Restaurants, cafes and bars are generally higher end with a higher price tag given the location and proximity to the towers and shopping malls, including Pavilion Mall which we could easily have spent hours in! It is worth booking in advance for the Petronas Towers tickets if you’re wanting to go up as they were sold out most days that we were there. Shopping here is incredible with all high street as well as designer brands, plus some very cool local shops too. Anything you’re wanting to purchase can be found here, with varying degrees of price versus the UK. We definitely found plenty to keep us entertained from a very busy and atmospheric Chinatown with bars aplenty in the evening, “Little India” next to Brickfields for some excellent cuisine, plus temples and beautiful architecture but after 3 days we were ready to head off.

New Paragraph

For our last night we headed back towards KL with a stop off en-route at the Batu caves which I highly recommend visiting however with around 200 steps up, it’s definitely not for those with mobility restrictions. We then headed to a stunning forest hideaway in a place called Serendah, staying in a glass house which is built sympathetically into the forest around small treks, waterfall walks and even with a gorgeous swimming pool using fresh river water flowing through it. It was the ultimate last night and although it was a bit out of the way it was so worth it for the experience. They even provide all the BBQ facilities required to make you very own little hideout, in privacy.

7 days would definitely have been too much just in KL city and I would recommend just 2, or maximum 3 nights but it is really worth considering exploring more of the area than just the city which has so much more to offer. Buses are very modern, in excellent condition and cheap so they can also be a great option for exploring the area if you preferred not to drive.

96 Hours in Grenada

96 Hours in Grenada

It’s been a long time since I was last on the island of Grenada and it did not disappoint. It’s so important to me to visit hotels so I can recommend the right property for the right client and there’s been lots of new hotels opening on the island so it’s crucial that I visited them.

The British Airways flight from Gatwick touched down in St Lucia both ways making the journey 10 hours 40 mins. First stop Spice Island Resort for two nights, which is one of my favourites in the Caribbean situated on the beautiful beach of Grand Anse. On arrival I was privileged to receive an Anthurium Pool Suite with my own pool and you can imagine that I didn’t want to leave!!

My next two nights were spent at True Blue Resort which is a great property especially for divers.

I always love trying new cuisine wherever I go in the World and Grenada's cuisine did not disappoint. Lunch at Savvy’s Beach Cabana, Dinner at Olivers Restaurant at Spice Island, Dodgy Dock Restaurant at True Blue Resort, Callaloo Restaurant at Six Senses for lunch, Dexter's Local Home-Style Restaurant for dinner, Beach Club at Coyaba for lunch.

96 hours is a short time however I managed to visit 11 hotels including Spice Island, Silver Sands Grand Anse (aka The Fortune Hotel), Blue Horizons, Mount Cinnamon, Calabash, True Blue Beach Resort, Six Senses, Silver Sands Beach House, Royalton Grenada and finally Coyaba.

Had the pleasure snorkelling around the world's first under water sculpture park with Eco Dive Grenada followed by a Sunset Cruise. An Open Back Jeep Tour with Sun Hunters Grenada where we experienced driving our own jeeps through the town of St Georges with lunch at the Annandale Waterfalls. House of Chocolate in St George’s was a great place to visit where I indulged in some nutmeg ice cream !!

Grenada remains as one of my favourite islands which is unspoilt, has low rise buildings, beautiful beaches, a wide variety of accommodation, exceptional hospitality, a large variety of excursions and incredible cuisine.

A Floating Luxury Resort

I embarked on the inaugural sailing of Explora 1 from Newcastle upon Tyne to Liverpool. Explora Journeys have stayed away from the ‘cruise’ vocabulary and instead describe themselves as a luxurious floating resort and to be honest this is exactly what they are. They’ve taken their inspiration from top European hotels and created spaces and venues that you would never know you are at sea.

They've kept the guest numbers at just 900, when in fact a ship of this size could have the capacity to carry three times that number. At no point did any venue feel crowded, and that's impressive, especially when spending a day at sea. A particular favourite venue of mine was the lobby bar, a buzzing space for pre-dinner cocktails, although dangerously close to the boutiques, featuring Rolex and Cartier as well as lesser-known luxury brands.

In total, there are six restaurants on board, five of which are included in the fare and you're absolutely spoilt for choice, regardless of your preferences. My favourite restaurant was Sakura, with an open kitchen and signature dishes, such as Wagyu beef tataki and incredible sushi, made fresh to order.

The accommodation is described as 'home at sea', but I can only dream of such luxury at home! There's a real elegance in the design - beautiful and comfortable. The balcony was also of a generous size.

The spa facilities were incredible and I treated myself to a luxurious facial which was worth every single penny!

The overall vibe onboard was relaxed and low key. Loved every minute of being on board and would love to experience it more and for much longer next time. Highly recommended for a luxurious holiday with a difference.

Japan: A Road Less Travelled

Overall, Japan is a Country which I would love to return to. The cleanliness, the culture, the food, the infrastructure, the safety together with the fusion of technology and tradition.

Some of the quirky experiences include:

- Taking your shoes off when entering a restaurant

- The number of vending machines, they were everywhere. Apparently there is one

vending machine per every 40 people in Japan and there is nothing you can’t find in

them !

- Kitkats - the Japanese love them and have them in over 200 different flavours !

- Tipping is classed as an insult

- Slurping of food is acceptable in public!

- Lack of bins, however everywhere is immaculate with no litter

- The most elaborate toilets in the World!

Below is a brief summary of what my few days entailed in Japan.

DAY 1. OKAYAMA, JAPAN

Arrived into Osaka Kansas International Airport at 0620 after an 11 hour flight from Munich with Lufthansa. Then hit the ground running with a local train to Shin Osaka Station followed by a bullet train to Okayama. Hotel Granvia was connected to the station so following a quick check in, it was time to explore the area and visit the castle and the gardens, which are ranked the third best gardens in Japan. Traditional Japanese dinner and our first of many experiences of taking our shows off when entering a restaurant.

DAY 2 - ONOMICHI

Headed by road for 90 minutes to the small and unassuming town of Onomichi. Traditional lunch was served and then wandered through what is known as ‘Temple Walk’ where we visited numerous shrines and temples whilst learning about Buddhism and Shintoism.

A short ride on Senkoji Cable Car (Otherwise known as a Ropeway in Johan) took us to a great observation point as it provided stunning views of the Seto Island Sea and of the town.

Shoes off again in the evening as we ventured to a Shabu-Shabu restaurant which is where we were presented with thinly sliced meat and vegetables which we boiled ourselves in water at the table with dipping sauces!!!

DAY 3 - KURASHIKI, JAPAN

Once a merchant settlement, Kurashiki has an element of calmness with willow lined canals, cobbled streets and a lack of vehicles. Kurashiki was relatively untouched by WW2 and therefore the original storehouses, mills and paved streets remain in beauty condition.

The impressive Ohara Museum of Art displays a range of pieces by Japanese, Asian, Egyptian artists along with Picasso and Monet.

Back to Okayama on a Nzomi bullet train which is the fastest train in Japan with speeds of up to 340kms an hour. Highly recommend sitting on the left hand side of the train as you will experience phenomenal views of Mount Fuji as you head into Tokyo.

What a contrast arriving into Shinagawa Station at 1745 as this was our first real experience of the hustle and bustle of Japan. Around 400,000 people pass daily through this station.

DAY 4 - MOUNT FUJI, HAKONE & LAKE ASHI

90 minute drive out of Tokyo City and I arrive at 5th Station of Mount Fuji, 2305 metres above sea level. On a clear day the views are incredible of the City below and Mount Fuji itself.

After a typical Japanese lunch at Lake Kawaguichiko, I ventured onto the Hakone Cable car where you have 360 degree views of Owakudani, a volcanic area with active sulphur vents. Sadly the day I arrived, the weather closed in so the view was not quite so spectacular!

Followed by a boat trip on Lake Ashi before embarking the bullet train back to Tokyo.

DAY 5 TOKYO, JAPAN

Another full day of sightseeing which involved a visit to Sangedotsuman which is the only temple in Tokyo to have survived the bombings of WW2. Tokyo Tower was built in 1958 to symbolise Tokyo’s recovery after the destruction of WW2, it is now Japan’s second tallest tower after Tokyo’s Skytree. The views of the City from the tower are spectacular.

After lunch, I experienced a rickshaw ride through the fascinating streets of Adusuki followed by a river cruise to the Asokusa Hama Rikyu Gardens.

60 Hours In Miami

A Whistlestop Tour of Miami

After a fabulous flight with American Airlines, the quickest time I’ve ever cleared American security I was whisked off to the fabulous Eden Roc Hotel which is located on Collins Avenue on Miami Beach.

A fast shower and change it was time to experience a Sunset Catamaran Bay Cruise for 2 hours 30 mins on board Caribbean Spirit which I can highly recommend. Followed by a very popular restaurant Tapas y Tintos on Espanola Way, South Beach for Spanish cuisine with wooden tables will spill out onto the street. This area is palm-lined pedestrianised street with twinkling string lights

above, again a great place to visit and soak up the atmosphere while doing a bit of people watching!

DAY 2

Outstanding breakfast the following morning at Eden Rock with a full sight inspection of both Eden Rock and its sister property Nobu which is a leading hotel of the World. They are situated on mid beach, the rooms at Eden Roc are contemporary, spacious and have private balconies which are either with an ocean view or a city view. Recently they have introduced an All Inclusive plan at the hotel which is phenomenal value for money.

A full tour of Frost Museum of Science which was celebrating its 10 th birthday is a great place for children as it mixes science with technology and is interactive. There is an aquarium and also a planetarium.

The next tour is a MUST DO in Miami, the culinary Wynwood Tour. We visited local restaurants for a small bite to eat whilst touring one of the largest outdoor art galleries in the World. My favourite was the ceviche at GKB which I will definitely return to as they have live music on a Saturday and Sunday for brunch. Wynwood is a district of Miami which is full of graffiti mixed with urban street art. Whilst you can wander around Wynwood free of charge, a tour is worthwhile as otherwise you miss so much.

Wow… a bit of free time now which it was great to wander along the boardwalk in front of the hotel which stretches 4 miles. However, you can also use the Free Trolley Service which runs every 20 minutes and serves all of Miami Beach.

It must be time to eat again!!! Off to Havana 1957 which is part of the same VE restaurant chain as Tintos y Tapas. This is a Cuban restaurant situated on Lincoln Road which another pedestrianised area which has numerous popular restaurants, however the food and the service here were exemplary.

Following dinner it was time to head to the centre of South Beach for some serious people watching at the popular Mango’s Tropical Café on Ocean Drive. This is a restaurant / nightclub which is open ‘til 5 am and offers live Latin music and entertainment.

DAY 3

It was sad to leave Eden Roc as it was somewhere I wished to stay longer at. Fabulous outside breakfast and site inspection at The Confidante which is part of the Hyatt chain. Situated directly on the beach front with art deco inspired rooms. Spacious cabanas and poolside bungalows are available to rent for the day.

Next it was time to get wet onboard Thriller which is a 45 minute speedboat adventure operated from Bayside Marketplace and provides a Miami Vice style ride as you travel past celebrity mansions, Fisher Island, Miami Beach as well as South Beach. I can highly recommend this.

Off to eat again but this time at the Smith & Wollensky situated on Miami Beach with both outdoor and indoor dining famous for its steak. Great place to people watch by the water’s edge. Don’t forget to check out some of the cars in the car park! Impressive. Make sure you make a reservation especially at the weekend and depending on the weather request outdoor dining.

Quick check into the next hotel which is in the Collins Park District, Plymouth Hotel . Whilst this hotel is not on the beach front, it does have beach facilities which is just 2 blocks away with the use of 2 free chairs per day. The hotel also has a swimming pool. The rooms do vary in size and style therefore it’s important to check the exact room category. Fabulous service from this property.

A walking tour of the Art Deco District on Ocean Drive followed which was informative and a great way to see and hear the fascination history from 1920 of this area. Due to the heat in the summer months it is recommend that you complete this tour either early in the morning or late afternoon.

It must be time to eat again!! This evening I experience fabulous sushi at the Blue Ribbon Bar & Grill in the Plymouth Hotel. The food here was very popular with the locals and absolutely superb.

Next it was time to attend a conference for 3 days however before returning home, a quick trip to the outlet mall was required which was definitely worth it!!

A Glimpse Into The Azores

A Glimpse Into The Azores...

In October 2017, I had the pleasure to be invited to the UK’s most prestigious ABTA Travel Convention on the islands of the Azores.

Whilst I was mainly there for the convention, I did take the opportunity to explore the main island of Sao Miguel for a day. The Azores comprises of nine unique Portuguese islands located in the mid - Atlantic between Portugal and North America. The scenery is sublime, from calm seas to crater lakes, colonial architecture, beaches, the island has so much to offer.

Whilst there are direct seasonal flights from London to the island of Sao Miguel, I took advantage to fly with TAP from Manchester via Lisbon.

Although I had a few hours wait in Lisbon Airport, I took advantage of the ANA Lounge to escape the hustle and bustle of the airport and also to relax. The taxi from the airport to my hotel was a 10 minutes and cost Euros 10. I stayed at the 4* Azoris Royal Garden on a Bed & Breakfast basis, which I can highly recommend. The location was superb, a 10 minute walk through cobbled streets to the main town of Ponta Delgada. The hotel provided a tranquil environment with a beautiful Japanese garden with water features and seating areas, plus an outdoor pool area and elegant public areas. Restaurants and bars were close by, all of which served fresh appealing food

with impeccable service at extremely affordable prices.

Although I travelled in October, the climate was around 22 degrees dropping to 18 degrees in the evening. In fact, the Azores has a mild climate year round (15 degrees in the winter and reaching 25C degrees in the height of summer) making it the perfect destination for outdoor activities such as walking, whale watching, kayaking and jeep tours.

I would recommend hiring a car to explore the island, driving is on the right. You can travel between the islands by boat, however it is not always recommended as the distance between most of the islands would mean that the majority of your day is spent travelling. The exception would be the central group of islands, Faial, Pico and Sao Jorge which, due to their close proximity, are only a short ferry crossing from one other (between 30-90 minutes). However, inter-island flights are possible although they did appear to be on

the high side.

Whilst I did not take advantage of the whale watching, those on the convention who did were certainly not disappointed and took some incredible pictures. I was informed that 24 of the planet's 80 species of whales and dolphins have been sighted off the coast of the Azores. During the summer months (Jul-Aug) migratory species including pods of baleen whales, pilot and beaked whales, Atlantic-spotted dolphins, striped dolphins and turtles pass the islands. Whereas, in winter and spring (Oct-Jun), species of baleen whales such as fin whales, sei whales, humpback whales and blue whales are likely to be seen.

I would recommend the island of Sao Miguel as an ideal island for an introduction to the Azores. There is plenty to see and do during a week long stay drive to the fabulous volcanic crater lakes, visit a pineapple factory and tea plantation, bathe in a thermal hot pool in Furnas botanical park, swim with dolphins, play a round of golf, bike rides, bird watching – plus much more. As an interesting two centre holiday I would suggest 3 or 4 nights in Lisbon and then the remainder of your holiday on Sao Miguel.

They are one of those untouched destinations. Visit now, before they change.

Let's Take a Tour of Indochina!

A Tour of Indochina; Off The Beaten Track and Full Of Charm

Thailand and Vietnam sandwich Cambodia to make up part of the Indochina region, and it provides the perfect opportunity for adventurers to see all three countries via small group or independent tours, in this instance with Explore.

The Far East has always been a firm favourite for me and this trip gave me the opportunity to travel solo and join a group of like minded travellers, giving the safety and security of group travel to a lone female but still independent enough to allow me to do as I pleased when I chose to do so.

Flying into Bangkok, we spent just 1 night in this vast, sprawling city. It wasn't nearly enough. With so much to see and do in Bangkok, we barely scratched the surface and I didn't even make it to any shopping centres or markets, however I did stumble across the deep friend crickets, scorpions and spiders which I was eager to try. The vendor seemed to insist on selling me 5 of the little critters. I wanted a taste, an experiment – not a whole meal! - but he obviously had a great trade as he refused to sell me anything less so I lost out on the taste experience which I've since decided wasn't such a great tragedy.

It was just the very next morning that we boarded a bus to head through Thailand and across the border into Cambodia. It was an early start and as much as I wanted to sleep, I found just travelling through the Thai countryside and seeing the local villages, towns and people going about their daily lies so fascinating, I didn't get a wink. It really is such a great way to see a country, just sitting back and observing the locals and the more rural areas.

After clearing the border traffic in Cambodia, we headed straight for Siem Reap to our B&B for the next 2 nights. Local accommodation in the heart of a community is an Explore speciality.

I spent the afternoon exploring the town itself and found the aptly named “Bar Street.” When you imagine the last thing you would expect to find in Siem Reap that is probably it, but that evening we all went out for food and 50p per pint of local beer and lively nightlife enticed so much so that I didn't leave until the very early hours of the morning. It could have been an 18-30 resort!

After very little sleep, we did have the early morning rise to get to Angkor Wat. I will admit that it gets very crowded and you do need to push and shove a little to get a good spot but our tour guide was fantastic and told us exactly where we needed to be. No-one could be disappointed with the dark morning sky when it starts turning pink, then orange and then tinged with blue – right over the top of the temples – and giving photo opportunities you would be hard pressed to find anywhere else in the world. I had hundreds of photos, every time thinking I had the perfect snap; only to take another a couple of minutes later because I thought the sky looked even more spectacular....and so on. Following the exhilarating morning treat, we spent the whole day exploring the ruins and temples scattered all amongst Angkor Wat. I had no idea that there are literally hundreds of ruins and you only really have time to see 2 or 3 properly, but by which time, in the scorching heat and after a little rest, it was almost time for sunset. The option to take an elephant ride to the top of a ruin to watch the sunset was there but we decided to hike up and after quite a climb (and probably infringing every health and safety precaution known to man), we were at the top and sat and watched a sunset to rival it's former sunrise. The vivid colours of the sky and the ruins in the distance are stunning.

After another day of exploring Siem Reap town and enjoying some “down time” we moved onwards on a rickety old bus towards Tonle Sap Lake. We had a wooden boat transfer planned to take us across the lake towards Battambang where we would spend a night. I hadn't heard anything about these boat journeys but it turned into an 8 hour long relaxing, scenic boat journeys slowly meandering past local fishing boats, floating villages where we stopped for a drink and a toilet stop (not recommended!) and local families frolicking in the lake. It was such a memorable journey.

Battambang is a lesser known small town in Cambodia, edging the lake. For an off-the-beaten track experience in Cambodia and an opportunity to see the “true” country, it's a great place to stop when you're travelling en route to Phnom Penh which was our intended route.

Our planned itinerary was to visit a local temple but have being “templed out” in the previous few days, our whole group opted to do something a little different and after quizzing our tour guide about available options, we came up with the idea to do the local train. Having no idea what this involved, we made our way by local tuk tuk to the “train station” (AKA an opening in amongst fields that had a rickety old train track running through it) and waiting to be told what to do. This “train” it emerged, was a sheet of wood, covered with a rug, placed on to train wheels with a motorbike engine on a lever. I've never seen anything like it, and as we climbed about, 4 to a “carriage” we jokingly said our final farewells. As we took off...or so it flt...the driver on our price of wood told us if we saw one coming from the other direction to tell him...the light “carriage” has to stop, get off and carry their carriage off the track to let the other one past. Of course there is only one track! At this point I was certain it would be a train wreck, literally. But it's amazing what works and how used to this mode of transport the locals are. With a face full of mossies and insects from going at high speed into the sunset, we had the giggle of the holiday and an experience we relived for days to come.

The following day, we departed Battambang by road towards Phnom Penh. To say I was looking forward to this part of the trip would be immoral. I wanted to visit the Killing Fields ad the Genocide Museum, knowing it would be a traumatic experience and I wasn't wrong. The trip thus far has been filled with laughter and we had made good friends along the way but the Killing Fields and the stories from the very recent history of the country was horrific and everyone was left feeling a little despondent. I won't go into too much detail, but the history of Cambodia is so recent that the locals admit to seeing some of Pol Pot's senior men still walking the streets of the city, and know they will never be prosecuted for the attrocities they committed. I will admit to my ignorance of what their history actually involved and this was a real eye opener. It is a place I would encourage you to go and see.

Pnomh Penh itself is a crazy, busy, typical Asian city with traffic and mopeds and people just about everywhere you can possibly look and a market that provides a fabulous haggling opportunity to pick up just about anything you could imagine.

Our final stop on the tour was heading into Vietnam to Saigon (or Ho Chi Minh city) which we set off for the following morning, back on the bus. It's another gorgeous journey through both countries and you really don't notice the hours that pass. If I thought that the Cambodian cities were hectic, Saigon is on another level. We unfortunately hit a downpour after just a few hours of arriving and the streets were literally running rivers through the city (up to our knees) which made our night out full of laughter and hysterics. It was actually quite fun to see the city in this light!

After another night filled with dancing and a few drinks in one of the busiest clubs I've seen in a while, we were up early the next day to get to the Cu Chi Tunnels: another place I was eager to get to see. The tunnels are where the soldiers and their families hid during the war and they really do show just how tiny the people are. They are like rabbit warrens under the earth, some going very deep and if they are the size of an A4 sheets of paper, it was considered large. How they breathed down there, I'm not sure. We did have the opportunity to go into one of the tunnels that has been adapted to the Western sizes (i.e. made bigger!) and then the choice to try one of the original sizes which I did opt to do, but it really was a squeeze and I'm only 5'4” and a size 10! A fantastic experience and I was so pleased I did it, but not recommended for the claustrophobic amongst you.

The rest of the afternoon was our own which I put to good use in a nearby 5 star hotel and indulged in a spa treatment and a swim. I'm pretty sure I'd earned it after our intrepid adventure!

I flew home the next morning with a host of amazing memories, stories that I still talk about to this day and the resolve to do another trip just as soon as I possibly could.

An Explore holiday changes you, even if it's just allowing you to see countries in a way that you otherwise wouldn't. You can always extend too, so if you wanted to see more of Vietnam or go and stay on a beach for a few days before flying home, anything is possible.

Timeless Pacific Coast Highway California

California's Pacific Coast Highway NEVER Goes Out of Fashion...Here's Why.

California has long been, and remains, one of the top self drive holidays to do in the States, or perhaps even the World. So off I went and booked a hire car (brand new white Mustang arrived at the airport) and explored Pacific Coast Highway for myself, from North to South.

Arriving into San Francisco after a long flight, I flaked out at an airport motel and tried to recuperate from the jet lag. I have to admit, I find it so much harder going West and it took me several days to actually sleep through the night. If any city can keep you entertained and wide awake it's San Fran, with an uber cool art scene and funky bars and clubs. It's a great “walkable” city and as with any city, I just love getting lost. You see so much more. So I got lost twice, walked for miles but saw parts of the city probably no tourist does. Union Square is fascinating, and I sat in the cafe, drank coffee (skinny flat white, I was even down with the lingo) and just people watched. Homeless people ranted and raved, tourists were snap happy with cameras and designer clad Americans went about their lives and I was in holiday heaven absorbing it all. From there I walked to China Town, yet more crazy hustle and bustle and weird and wonderful “gifts” for sale, all the way down to Fisherman's Wharf with it's stunning views over Alcatraz. I didn't have nearly enough time to get the boat over, which was actually very busy anyway and I should have booked, which I'm disappointed about to this day. Don't make my mistake – book before you go! And of course, no city tour is complete without a hop on, hop off bus tour which I took out to Golden Gate Bridge and past the city's parks and back around all the places I had just walked from. My approach to city tours is to not have a plan; see where you end up. It' so much more exciting.

After a whistle stop tour of San Fran, off I drove down to Monterey and Carmel: gorgeous little quaint seaside towns that are well worth a visit and stop off on the journey South (or North, depending on where you're driving from!) About 15 minutes drive from Carmel town is Carmel Valley Ranch, a large luxury gated resort with suites looking out over the lush green valley and activities in abundance. They get incredibly busy during peak summer months with American families taking up the tennis, kids club, swimming pools, treks and other great activities all organised with families in mind. I loved the evening s'mores by the fire after dinner and the staff are great at getting the kids involved and letting parents have some down time. It's a fantastic option for couples or families making the drive down the coast and the perfect place to stop for a day or two.

Onwards the following day took me through Pismo Beach, Big Sur and eventually stopping in Santa Barbara at Four Seasons The Biltmore. For those used to holidaying in the States you will know that they are fascinated by the old buildings and architecture we have in the UK but this property has it's own heritage and has been converted into a stunning resort directly in front of Butterfly Beach. My room had a wrap around balcony looking right out to sea and over towards the beach club which is free for hotel guests to use. Cottages behind the main building are perfect for travelling families too with lots of private garden space, and some can connect with another room for an accompanying nanny if preferred. Santa Barbara town is a very short drive away and is genuinely one of the prettiest I have seen outside of Spain or Italy. It has Italian style architecture and bespoke little stores, plus great eateries as well as international department stores and I could have happily stayed another night or two.

I would say unfortunately, I headed off the next day but the following morning took me on a coffee fuelled drive further down the coast to Santa Monica to stay at the infamous, Shutters on the Beach. The reputation of this hotel goes before it and as such, it's long been on my list of places to stay. Perfectly positioned on Santa Monica beach, just along from Pier 39 and boasting boardwalk cafes and restaurants. This hotel is grand and imposing, whilst being comforting and cosy on the inside. Rooms are designed with warmth and a “home from home” beach house vibe, with some looking directly out to see and others overlooking the sidewalks. Sun drenched days on the beach are followed by lively nights in Santa Monica and although it's a very short drive from LA, it's worth staying out on the beach for an alternative LA experience before heading downtown.

There are so many choices of hotels to choose from in LA itself that it can become confusing but if you are a first timer, Beverly Wilshire is a prime choice. The name is world renowned but they haven't rested on their laurels. Service, product and position is impeccable and although hotels of this calibre can be pretentious at times, Beverly Wilshire couldn't be friendlier or more welcoming. I have to be honest and say that other people had given me varying advice about LA: some loved the city and some would never go back. I genuinely think a lot of the opinion you have is due to where you stay. Don't go downtown in you're new to LA. As with any downtown, it can be intimidating. Hollywood, as glizty and exciting as it is, would also not be for me. You can go and visit during the day and spend hours watching the world go by, but you don't need to stay there. Beverly Wilshire is at the bottom of Rodeo Drive, walking distance to restaurants and cafes and accessible to the rest of the city too. LA is vast: you need a car or to take a tour so make sure you need to choose your base carefully. I personally loved LA, in fact it was one of the highlights of my trip. There is something special and exciting and I will definitely be going back.

After a couple of days exploring all that LA has to offer – including Rodeo Drive too many times to mention – I headed South once again via Newport Beach for a quick spot of lunch. There are so many great beaches within an hour of LA: Huntington, Laguna, Newport to name but a few, and all offer that chilled out American seaside vibe which is the perfect contrast after being in such a vast city. I wanted to end in San Diego but found an absolute gem of a resort about 30 mins before arriving in San Diego: Rancho Valencia.

Rancho Valencia is a sprawling gates resort in the hills just an hour's drive from the beaches in an area called Rancho Sante Fe. It has so much to offer, you could spend far more than the 2 nights that I did. First, it's an internationally renowned tennis resort. I did take a lesson, having never been a sports enthusiast and I even left the court thinking I could be a pro which is entirely down to the skills of the instructor, I have since discovered! The resort had been recently renovated when I visited, and by a designer who clearly loved the resort. The original casitas which spread throughout the resort (you really need a car or hire a buggy) haven't been altered so original red tinged brickwork with established gardens hide any evidence of renovation. Inside the casitas is another story. Every single mod con including state of the art coffee machines, fire places, surround sound TV's with DVDs, lighting...you name it, it's got it. The space is endless but the two real treats:

1. The outdoor garden complete with fire for your own private s'mores; plunge pool jacuzzi and yet more space, completely enclosed by the casita walls offering privacy and romance in abundance, and

2. The bathroom is out of this world. The size yet again impresses, with separate bath, separate walk in show, his and hers sinks and even then there is space to have a party in there! The real treat sounds ludicrous, but it's the toilet. I've never been excited about a toilet, I promise you this isn't a fetish. But when you walk in the cubicle and the seat goes up automatically, to have puffs of air freshener go off whilst sitting, and remote control options for oscillating, front, rear and even a drying option was just ridiculous. Did I mention the warmed seat?

The resort has stunning restaurants, a great bar for winding down in the evening and being just 30 mins outside of San Diego means the city is there if you want it.

At this point, I was certain the trip couldn't get any better, but when I jetted off from San Diego to Los Cabos a couple of days later, I discovered that there is another resort to love just as much.

Cabo has become a mecca for the stars and celebrities looking for some sun and is so easily combined with California. It has a taste of true Mexico, almost from a film set and of course with the influx of tourists are the vast choice of apartments and hotels to choose from. I discovered before heading out there that the Cabo Corridor is where most of the nightlife was found and as I was looking for more of a relaxing end to my holiday, I opted for Cabo San Lucas: slightly further south, perched on the tip of the Baja peninsula - Capella Pedregal.

Capella are becoming a world class brand of hotels worldwide for their service and “tailored” experience: no check in or check out times because your holiday should be on your time; a personal assistance contacts you two weeks prior to arrival to organise any last minute extras for your stay and of course the personal service from all staff that you would expect in any luxury hotel.

Driving just out of the town and heading towards a mountain side, you discover a lantern-lit tunnel etched out of the mountain with a view at the other end that could have been painted on: crystal blue water, clear blue skies and an attentive welcoming committee. This is the grand entrance to Capella Pedregal. Every single room is ocean facing and has an infinity plunge pool on the terrace looking straight out to see. During out winter months it's a prime location for whale watching and as such, binoculars or telescopes are provided in every room. Mexican appetisers are provided in the room on arrival with tortilla chips and dips, cerviche (delicious!) and of course, Mexican beer. A bottle of tequila is even provided in the room for your stay. I was incredibly lucky and upgraded on arrival to a two bedroom ocean view suite that had more space than I knew what to do with, infact I only used one wing; a large lap pool with access directly to the beach, 3 separate sun terraces and my own waiter who came from the main bar every half an hour to bring skewered fruit, nibbles and any drinks my heart desired.

For food lovers, cuisine is exquisite in all restaurants but noted in every good guide book worldwide, and rightly so, is El Farallon. Carved into the cliff and candle lit each evening; this is a sea food restaurant where you choose your fish and pay by weight, with a choice of starters and sides. Truly one of the most romantic settings I have ever seen and outside guests can book. In fact, even as a guest it's worth booking as it's so popular and you absolutely don't want to miss out!

The only down side was that I only had two nights before heading back to the airport and you could easily spend 7 nights or more in this heavenly retreat by the sea.

Whether you're going to California or any other major US city, Cabo is accessible by numerous flights so can easily be added on and offers an authentic alternative to the American beach resorts which can be very crowded, especially in summer months.

Tanzania: A Safari Which You Need on Your Bucket List

Tanzania Really Hits The Spot for Your Next Safari

There are a number of great options of where to safari in Tanzania: NgoroNgoro crater and the Serengeti being two of the most popular, but the Selous area is coming into it's own due to the authentic experience on offer.

The Selous is the slightly lesser known area with far fewer tourists heading to the area. Vast, barren land covering the Selous game reserve covers an an area around the size of a small country like Belgium! This makes it ideal for an authentic safari. You may not know in advance where the lion, leopard or elephant are when you set off on a game drive but when you do find it, it's just you and the game. Some safaris are such busy reserves that you can have a number of other jeeps watching the same game as you, a sure reminder that you are on the tourist trail. For me, Selous was special because what we saw was unique to us.

Dar as Salaam is the main gateway to Tanzania so onward travel is by light aircraft to a local airstrip in the Selous. Most of the major camps have their own “airstrips.” I use the term loosely as this is essentially a small area of reasonably flat land that is cleared from trees and grasses and really gives a wild, outback welcome to your first camp. On our first day, as we were exploring camps, we went to see Sands River camp en route to our final destination.

Sands River is one of the more famous camps in the Selous and has a prime position set in wooden tents with views over the river and as a result, offers perfect game viewing opportunities. Every item does need to be packed away in secure boxes which are provided in the rooms so curious monkeys can't treat themselves to your treasured sunglasses or see what brushing teeth is all about. Monkeys, elephant and hippo regularly make their way past the stilted tents and the food and wine served with meals are simply delicious. Attentive service and friendly, knowledgeable guides are on hand for every desire you so wish.

We left by 4 x4 jeep through off road terrain, stumbling across giraffe, wild dog, and impala by the dozen, until we reached Selous Safari Camp (now known as Siwandu after so many camps in the area used the name “Selous Safari”): our first overnight stay. With any safari experience, it should always be accepted that game will go where they want, when they want so nothing is ever guaranteed with regards sightings but for us, we saw so much game at this camp. Just 12 tents are pitched around Lake Nzerakera , again offering excellent game viewings due to the animals inevitably needing to find water during sunrise and sunset. Tents are as luxurious as you would expect in this standard of camp, and bear no resemblance to what we would consider a tent. Large rooms, separate bathrooms with outdoor and indoor showers, a luxurious oversized double bed with tasteful furniture. They really do have it all and such friendly staff escorting you wherever you wish to go. Wild dog seemed to be ten a penny; so many that we became uninterested when we found more until our guide told us how lucky we were to have found so many! Game drives in the afternoon allowed us to find giraffe, herds of zebra and literally hundreds of hartibeest and wildebeest. Such a treat. An evening on a boat cruise at sunset allowed us to enjoy sundowner cocktails and discover just how many hippo and crocs lay beneath the boat as we cruised around, finally finding a pride of 11 lion resting by the banks of the river. I'm not sure whether finding the pride of lion or the spectacular sunset was more photograph worthy. What a choice.

Our next stop was at Amara Selous, however we headed via Beho Beho camp which was up in the hills and provided us with the opportunity to see the area from a different perspective. Game viewing is always more guaranteed when you stay by water, however Beho Beho, being perched at the top of a hill, allows you to look down upon the trees, watering holes and grasses and spotting game from this level is such a thrill. You feel that you have found something that no one else can see and although we weren't lucky enough to spot him, a leopard chasing it's kill was observed just 2 days before our arrival and guests were clearly still enthralled by it. Beho Beho is at the top of it's game in standards, and feels incredibly relaxed and luxurious in it's ambience. A “loo with a view” really must be seen to be believed but if you use it, prepare to take a while to emerge. For those that can't wait, pictures are supplied!

Arriving at Amara Selous was quite a drive for us, but clients would usually arrive by light aircraft unless staying close by already. Amara camp is relatively new, having only been there around 6 years and the area was formerly a hunting area. Incredibly sad that this still happens but it will take a long time to be completely abolished. The camps whole heartedly support abolishing the hunting business and progress has been made, no more so than by Peter and Anita who run the camp with passion, experience and friendliness. Again, based by the water, this time Ruaha river, providing activities for non-game times such as fishing, star gazing and photography. Peter is a particularly keen photographer and happy to help any amateur (myself included) take a memorable picture. My highlights here were many: Gloria the Hippo lazing across the path to our tent forcing us to go around back for entry, our fishing trip on the banks of the river, and one particular game drive in which we thought our driver had gotten lost after driving around in circles for a while, before we eventually saw what he was looking for: a herd of elephant with their young bathing and frolicking in the water. A very special moment.

Our final dinner was a surprise bush dinner and yet again, every whim was catered for with stunning food served by exquisite chefs with lights lit around the clearing and an armed guide just in case a lion or two decided they wanted to say hello. Light pollution is almost non existent and the sky lights up with stars, satellites, planets, meteors crossing the night sky and beauty to bring a tear to anyone's eye.

The following morning we headed to Zanzibar to relax for a few days before heading home.

Zanzibar , although officially being an Indian Ocean island, is a far cry from it's popular cousins of Mauritius and the Maldives due to it's African dominance. Rustic and authentic with a laid back ambience and beach based accommodation ranging from backpacker style beach shacks to genuine 5 star luxury hotels, there really is something for you no matter what you're looking for. I travelled around the island staying at some of the best luxury hotels on offer but it should be noted that access to even the very best luxury resorts , are inevitably via some gravel “roads” and local villages. I personally found this fascinating to see African island life, the island really has it's own heartbeat, and the hotels often buy their fresh produce from the local villages and employ local people to help tourism be sustainable for the inhabitants of the island. Service standards, whilst excellent throughout, are distinctly different to the Maldives or Mauritius who have seen tourists flock to their islands for many more years than Zanzibar and are as such, far more polished.

Our first stop was to The Residence on the South West Coast. The Residence now have 4 properties worldwide including this one and all are stunning in their colonial elegant décor and high standard of furnishings. Set right on the beach and with bicycles provided, the resort feels almost like a golf resort with clean pathways leading through meandering gardens and with low rise accommodation spread over the grounds. The four poster over sized double bed with draping mosquito nets and a view straight out to the sea is the first thing you see walking into the room. Service is probably the best we experienced anywhere on the island which is explained by the staff having been training largely by their Mauritian sister property. In the early morning you wake to find locals villagers and fisherman on the beach digging up the sand. Inquisitive, I asked a member of staff wheat was happening and he politely explained that they come to dig for worms for bait. They are very shy and private people (particularly the women being a largely Muslim island), extremely non-intrusive and if anything, it brought yet another dimension to the stay. I should explain that many hotels in Zanzibar claim to have a private beach: in fact none of them do. It is not allowed to “own” a beach in Zanzibar so whilst some hotels may be so far remote for villagers to reach their beach, it still is not private and if locals do come along to fish or to dig for their worms they are perfectly welcome to do so.

After a delightful stay at The Residence (and a wondrous massage) we moved onwards to Essque Zalu : an impressive, formidable structure boasting the highest roof in Zanzibar and set right on the sea. Essque Zalu is more modern, with an art gallery café set in the roof of the reception area, and cleverly designed swimming pool looking out to sea, leading to a board walk jutting out to sea which is where we were led for lunch. A stunning banquet ensued and in all honesty, I didn't even feel hungry but it would be a sin to turn down such a feast. The sun made the sea twinkle it's turquoise eyes at us and as the wine flowed, I fell a little bit in love with the resort. A very beautiful and modern hotel with just enough African touches to remain in tune with it's heritage. Despite the hotel being set on the sea front , it is a rocky drop down to the ocean and the beach which belongs to be hotel is a short drive away, reached by the hotel's complimentary shuttle service, although I'm not sure I would have felt the need to go there given how gorgeous the pool was.

Onwards to our final stop at Baraza which raised the bar yet again: a grand, almost Middle Eastern style hotel with lanterns lighting up the pathways in the evening, large pots of cardomom seeds and cinnamon cloves in the reception wafting around scents that can barely be described. It is another luxury resort, set in single story villas and the rooms are exquisite. A low rise day bed as well as king beds and huge bathrooms including outdoor showers are encased in each villas, some with private plunge pool and large open terraces giving garden or ocean front views. The Ottomans have a large influence on the island from the days when they used to pass through for trade and it is their influence that inspired the design of Baraza, and thankfully so as the result is stunning.

The French are already flying to Zanzibar as a stand alone destination for a 7 to 14 night holiday and the British market as yet doesn't seem to have realised just how special this island is and deserves a longer stay, so although adding onto any safari destination in Africa is incredibly easy and works as a great twin centre, it could easily be considered as a single centre in it's own right.
